Program Overview

The Dual Master’s Program (DMP) Master of Mental health, Schooling, and the A(I)rts  & Master of Music and Music Education is the outcome of the collaboration between the Dept. of Music Science and Art, University of Macedonia, in Thessaloniki, Greece and Teachers College, Columbia University in New York.

The  DMP Master of Mental health, Schooling, and the A(I)rts  & Master of Music and Music Education recognizes the tremendous need for caring for children’s and teenagers’ well-being and mental health, and proposes the creative processes of participatory arts (music, drama, dance, filmmaking, poetry, storytelling and a variety of multimodal expressive processes) and the critical, ethical use of AI as tools for promoting mental health, educational innovation and community building in the school context.

The Dual Master Programs provides a unique opportunity for two discrete master degrees obtained from two unique universities on the interdisciplinary fields of mental health, arts and education, with considerable less coursework and duration of study compared to what would be required for obtaining both degrees out of the context of the Dual Master.

The Dual Master’s Program (DMP) Master of Mental health, Schooling, and the A(I)rts  & Master of Music and Music Education program is designed for individuals who:

  • Are interested in the intersection of education, mental health, and the arts, with an emphasis on music and music education
  • Have a strong motivation to support the wellbeing of children and adolescents
  • Value interdisciplinary and experiential learning
  • Are open to reflective, relational, and creative practices
  • Are interested in the ethical use of AI in educational environments

The Dual Master Program is awaiting accreditation and is expected to start in June 2027.

The program website will be updated with more info on a constant basis.

Reasons to attend

  1. Join an elite international program.
  2. Obtain two unique degrees in considerably shorter period and with diminished coursework.
  3. Be an agent of change: Contribute to a unique global initiative that addresses pressing mental health issues in schools through the arts, creating ripples of positive change in communities worldwide.
  4. Enjoy international networking opportunities

Program Structure

The DMP awards two discrete Master degrees;

(a) the MEd in Mental Health, Schooling, and the A(I)rts , awarded by the Department of Music Science and Art, University of Macedonia, Greece; and

(b) the MA or EdM in Music and Music Education , awarded by the Department of Arts and Humanities, Teachers College, Columbia University.

These programs include equivalent courses, the credits of which may be transferred from one degree program to the other, resulting in diminished coursework and duration of study, while service cultural awareness, innovative thinking, internationalization of study, and global networking.

The MEd in Mental Health, Schooling, and the A(I)rts, awarded by the Department of Music Science and Art, University of Macedonia, is a 90-ECTS program of study, with a duration of 1,5 years (3 semesters) or 1 intensive year (summer term, fall semester, spring semester), addressing the need for theoretical and practical training of current and future teachers and other professionals working with children and teenagers on how, assisted by artificial intelligence and the philosophy and methodology of participatory arts, they can identify and address behavioural and mental health issues, prevent related problems and promote children’s and teenagers’ mental health in school.

The Master in Music and Music Education awarded by the Department of Arts and Humanities at Teachers College, Columbia University, is offered in two options:

(a) “MA in Music and Music Education”, is a 32-credit program of study, with a regular duration of 4 terms/semesters.

(b) “EdM in Music and Music Education” is a 60-credit program of study, with a regular duration of 6 semesters. It is an advanced professional degree for practitioners in music education, designed to prepare graduates for careers in elementary schools, secondary schools, and colleges.

Graduates of the UOM MEd in Mental Health, Schooling, and the A(I)rts may apply and get admitted to the TC EdM in Music and Music Education and transfer up to 30 credits of equivalent courses. Thus, they are able to attend the remaining coursework and graduate much earlier, obtaining the second degree (TC EdM degree).

Graduates of the TC MA or EdM in Music and Music Education graduates may apply and get admitted to the UOM MEd in Mental Health, Schooling, and the A(I)rts, and transfer up to 34 TC credits (68 ECTS) of equivalent courses. This means that TC EdM graduates will need to take the remaining 22 ECTS (11 credits) at UOM and get the MEd degree, too.

Applying for admission to the Dual Program

Admission to the Dual Master Program, consists of two separate admission processes; (a) the admission process to the UOM MEd in Mental Health, Schooling, and the A(I)rts, and (b) the admission process for the TC MA or EdM in Music and Music Education.  An interested candidate should apply for admission to both programs but cannot attend both programs simultaneously.  Each admission process has its own characteristics that are specifically set out on the website of each degree program.

The Dual Degree Pathways are governed by the Special Protocol of Cooperation between UOM and TC. This protocol specifies the terms of student mobility, credit recognition, quality assurance, and each institution’s responsibilities.

Student Experience

Study and live in two of most amazing cities in the world
Thessaloniki
The Greek Spirit

Be part of the extraordinarily vibrant city and rich culture of Thessaloniki, enjoy the Greek cuisine in charming cafes, tavernas and restaurants, explore ancient ruins and vibrant neighborhoods, and immerse in the experience of living like a Greek.

New York City
A Global Hub

Immerse yourself in the cultural melting pot of the world, with the inspiring art scene, the iconic lifestyle and the endless opportunities for networking and collaboration.

A master’s student at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki typically experiences a mix of academic focus, relaxed lifestyle, and a very social urban environment.

In terms of your academic life, your classes will be smaller than undergraduate ones, so you’ll have more interaction with professors. The facilities, such as libraries, labs, study rooms and even the university campus are very well-maintained.

Thessaloniki has a very distinctive rhythm. Students often describe it as “relaxed” or even “chill”. The city hosts around 90,000 students, making it one of the most student-heavy cities in Greece. You will enjoy long coffee sessions with friends in cafés, walks along the waterfront and studying in libraries or cafés rather than at home. The city is compact, so you can walk almost everywhere, campus, cafes, nightlife spots, especially if you live downtown. Thessaloniki is the city where always something is happening, live music, student parties, cultural events. And as far as the food is concerned, cheap street food, like gyros, souvlaki and pastries, is a big part of student survival.

Many students arrive for studies and end up staying longer than planned. That’s a pretty common outcome in Thessaloniki.
